New Building Codes Passed After Lessons From Hurricane Sandy
On November 14th The New York Times reported that “the New York City Council approved new building codes, which were recommended by the task force convened after Superstorm Sandy. The new codes are expected to ensure structures are more sustainable during emergencies. Among the changes are that residential buildings of five stories or more have to add faucets in common areas, so that residents on higher floors have some access to water for drinking, flushing toilets, and other uses. New construction must comply immediately, while existing buildings have eight years to comply.”.
Yarmus Engineering, P.C. is available to consult regarding and design in accordance with all applicable code requirements, including these new code provisions enacted in the after-math of Sandy. We continue working to assist our neighbors in the shore communities of NYC and NJ. Please contact our office if we can be of assistance to you or your clients regarding such matters.
Bill would revive push to create a national infrastructure bank
On November 14th The Hill reported that “The Building and Renewing Infrastructure for Development and Growth in Employment Act, or BRIDGE Act for short, revives the concept of a national infrastructure bank. It’s been filed by Sens. Mark Warner, D-Va., and Roy Blunt, R-Mo., and if passed, would develop an “infrastructure financing authority” that would receive initial funding of $10 billion, which could be used as leverage to attract private sector investments and make possible as much as $300 billion in total project investment, according to Warner’s office”.
The condition of infrastructure throughout the tri-state area has been talked about often during the recent “election season” and this time of continued economic concern. To this end, Andrew R. Yarmus, P.E., our firm President and an officer of both the local chapters of the NY State Society of Professional Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers, is helping to plan a panel discussion and forum which will include representatives of various local area utility companies, government agencies, and local area politicians. The event will be held during Engineers’ Week in February 2014. Please contact our office if you are interested in attending and/or would like to suggest topics for discussion at the event.
