New Jersey parking garage collapse destroys cars, injures no one
A steel-and-glass canopy fell from an apartment building onto a parking garage beneath it, causing the garage’s levels to “pancake” onto each other. Cars were buried in the rubble, but no one was killed. “We’re feeling like we really dodged a bullet on this one,” said Lt. Stephen Lindner of the Hackensack, N.J., Fire Department. July 17, 2010 coverage of the garage collapse can be found online at the websites of both the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times.
As we reported last month, the staff of Yarmus Engineering, P.C. is available to inspect parking garages, and structures in general, to assist in identifying conditions which might lead to such structural failures. Please contact our office if we can be of assistance to you or your clients.
Celebrating 20 Years of the ADA: Providing the Pieces to the Puzzle
July 26th marked the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which has improved access in the built environment. Long before the ADA was enacted, the International Code Council and its founding members were working to address disability needs through changes to building and fire safety codes. In addition to codes, ICC A117.1 is a nationally recognized standard of requirements for making buildings accessible.
Yarmus Engineering, P.C. is available to provide design and consulting services to assist building owners and property managers with ADA, accessibility, and other code-related requirements and standards. Please contact our office if we can be of assistance to you or your clients.
