U.S. cities, states require large buildings to cite energy use
On August 1st USA Today published an article which asked “Wonder how high the utility bills will be at that apartment you like? To help consumers and spur efficiency, U.S. states and cities are beginning this year to require that commercial buildings measure and disclose their energy use.
The new rules, which generally exempt small businesses, are expected to shame building owners into upgrades that will save energy and create jobs.” August 1st was “the deadline for 16,000 large buildings in New York City— representing half of its interior space — to report how much energy they used in the past year or face $500 quarterly fines. The city will post the data on a public website next year”.

Green Homes Sell for More,
Studies Show
On August 1st EcoHome Magazine reported “as green building pros know all too well, today’s recession-weary home buyers are often more concerned with price than with a home’s energy rating, durability, or indoor air quality. New research, however, reflects a steady increase in the public’s understanding of the value of green building features”.
A recent “study’s authors noticed a consistent trend, even while home sales in general were down: Third-party certification results in a higher sales price, says Dakota Gale, sustainable finance program manager at the Earth Advantage Institute”.
Yarmus Engineering, P.C. is available to consult with building owners, purchasers, and property managers regarding energy efficiency construction, alternatives, and renovations, as well as to provide pre-purchase building inspection services.
