10 Hospitalized for Carbon Monoxide Exposure in Port Washington
On November 30th Patch.com reported that “ten people were hospitalized after becoming ill from carbon monoxide fumes that came from a Port Washington restaurant…According to authorities, Eastern Strawberry Restaurant, located at 704 Port Washington Blvd., was having floors power washed with a gas power washer inside the building…’Any type of gas-powered piece of equipment emits fumes which causes carbon monoxide,’ Port Washington Fire Department Chief Bryan Vogeley told Patch. “It’s dangerous for them to have that in there”.
Stories like the above demonstrate why it is so important to have carbon monoxide detectors installed at premises which are utilizing equipment capable of producing carbon monoxide as a product of combustion. Yarmus Engineering, P.C. makes it a priority to remain aware and knowledgeable of routine code developments, as well as the availability of new products, systems, and detectors, so that we can keep our clientele informed of such developments which might affect their projects we are working on. In fact, we recently upgraded our own in-office equipment to include “smart products” which will automatically shutdown our HVAC system, and notify key personnel via a smart phone app, immediately upon detecting the presence of smoke, fire, or carbon monoxide. Please contact our office if we can be of assistance to you or your clients regarding such matters.
Oakland tragedy: Why you should be your own fire marshal
On December 5th CNN.com reported that “this past Friday night saw a deadly fire erupt in Oakland, California. Within minutes, at least 36 young lives were snuffed out at the Ghost Ship, a dilapidated warehouse with a history of violations and complaints (including reportedly being reported to the fire marshal in 2014)…No official cause of the fire has yet been determined, but illegal residences, an illegal party, and inadequate exits appear to have contributed. The Ghost Ship building was not licensed as a nightclub or for residences, but early reports suggest that its landlords allowed both uses…Whatever it is, it will probably continue to impair judgments in the future, right after the brief period of heightened attention and code enforcement that usually follows tragic club fires. The one takeaway from the sorry history of club fires is that we can’t rely on bands, owners, or public officials to protect us when we attend shows….In short, we’ve no choice but to be our own best fire marshals”.
