The 7th annual National Safety Stand Down to prevent falls in construction takes place this year from May 4th – 8th. Historically, falls are the leading cause of fatalities in construction, accounting for one third of all fatalities in the industry. Resources for the event are available on the official website.

May is Building Safety Month
On April 17th The International Code Council reminded us that “despite all that is happening right now with the coronavirus, the 40th annual campaign (for Building Safety Month) will remain uninterrupted. Safety in the built environment is an essential component of maintaining public health, making Building Safety Month more relevant now than ever…Disaster mitigation through the adoption and enforcement of building codes is one of the best ways for communities to prepare and protect against future disasters. Homes and buildings that are built in compliance with building safety codes and the officials who enforce the codes are essential to helping communities minimize the risks of death, injury and property damage in the event of a disaster…This year’s campaign themes are: Week One, May 1-10, Disaster Preparedness; Week Two, May 11-17, Water Safety; Week Three, May 18-24, Resiliency. Sustainability. Innovation.; and Week Four, May 25-31, Training the Next Generation“.

Four Steps of Designing an Effective Fall Protection System
On April 28th the American Society of Safety Professionals reminded that that “protecting workers at height is a great challenge for occupational safety and health professionals. Given the nature of the work and the risks it presents, these environments create some of the most hazardous working conditions”. Even during the time of this coronavirus pandemic, it is important to remember that essential construction projects remain ongoing, and that worker safety remains as important and relevant as ever.

Yarmus, P.E., F.NSPE, as a Past Chair of the National Society of Professional Engineers PE’s in Construction Interest Group, has helped to facilitate discussions between Professional Engineers across the country on important matters such as safety in the construction industry.
